Kids Specialty Classes and Workshops

New Specialty Classes and Workshops are now being offered at Riverbottom Pottery for young potters and teens.  Book early, as events are limited in size and fill quickly.Class 2 2014-2

 1. Clay Camps for Kids:

Your kids will enjoy a week of exploring the possibilities of clay and imagination.  Our instructors will guide them through various hand building techniques such as slab, coil and pinch pot.  They will become experts in altering their forms, adding creative embellishments, and glazing their artwork while learning the workings of a functioning pottery studio

  • Monday through Thursday
    • 9:30 to 12:00 pm
    • Ages 8 to 14
    • Learn hand building and glazing techniques
    • Fun filled 4-day camp, 2 1/2 hrs each day
    • $95 per child (multiple session/child discount – $90 per child for multiple session or additional child signup from the same family)
    • 3 sessions to choose from:
      • Session 1: June 19 to 22
      • Session 2: July 10 to 13
      • Session 3: August 7 to 10

2. Lamp Building Workshop:

NEW!  Lamp Workshop for Teens (12-16 year olds)
9:30 am-12:00 pm

Fridays June 16 and 23, assembly and pick up lamps on Friday, June 30

Learn how to turn a sculptural creation into a working table lamp.  Our instructor will show you how to use handbuilding methods to build a one of a kind lamp base out of clay.  During the second session glazing techniques will be taught along with an introduction to kiln loading and firing processes.  When you pick up your finished piece you will learn how to wire your lamp into a functional piece of art.

Fee:  $65 per child covers instruction, ceramic materials, glazes and firing and lamp wiring kits.

3. Ceramic Mardi Gras Masks:

New!  Mask workshop for Teens (12-16 year olds)

Tuesday evenings June 20 and June 27,

6:00 to 8:00 pm

Your teen will enjoy creating a decorative Mardi Gras-Type mask with handbuilding clay techniques.  Use your imagination and  creativity to make a personalized mask that you can display or use.  During the first session each teen will create their personalized mask.  During session two, they will hand paint their masks to add that final touch.

Fee:  $50 per child inclusive, covers instruction, ceramic materials, glazes and firing

4. Mosaic Workshop:

NEW! Mosaic Art Workshop for Teens (ages 14 and up)

9:30 am-12:00 pm

Monday, July 24 – Thursday, July 27

Our mosaic workshop will lead students through the process of incorporating broken pieces and found objects into something new.  All materials and supplies will be provided, but students are encouraged to bring in their own found items such as ceramic tiles, plates, buttons, sea glass, pebbles etc.  This class will introduce teens to the process of design, teaching color theory and composition, as well as the technical aspects of mounting and grouting their finished piece.  No art experience is necessary.

Fee:  $115 per student.  Includes all ceramic materials necessary to create the mosaic, adhesives and grout, safety equipment (gloves, dust masks and safety glasses)

5. Wind Chime Workshop:

New! Wind Chime Workshop for kids (ages 10 to 16)

9:30 to 12:00 pm

Fridays, June 30 and July 7

Use your imagination to create your own working wind-chime.  During session 1 you will pick a theme, create the individual chimes and clapper.  Session 2 you will decorate and paint your chimes for final firing.  Kits will be supplied for final assembly.

Fee:  $50 per student

6. Fairy and Gnome Gardens:

 New!  Fairy and Gnome Garden houses and structures for kids (ages 8 to 16)

9:30 to 12:00 pm

Monday June 26 to Thursday June 29

Add whimsy to any garden with your very own miniature castle or fairy cottage.  Fairy gardens or gnome homes can be easily displayed in containers or in a corner of a flower bed and are decorated with miniature buildings and accessories to welcome these imaginary beings.  Come make a focal point for your garden and learn handbuilding techniques including slab construction, coil building and pinching methods.  Then we’ll make accessories incorporating glass, and found objects to outfit your fairy garden or gnome home!

All materials included (bringing in found objects is optional)

Fee:  $95 per student

7. Dungeons & Dragons:

New!  Dungeons and Dragons Sculptures and Figurines for kids ages (12 to 16)

9:30 am – 12:00 pm

Friday July 14 and Friday July 21

Use your imagination to make a mythical dragon come to life in clay.  In sessions 1, create your own whimsical dragon from scratch using hand building techniques such as slab, pinch pot and coil.  In session 2, you will clean and paint your dragon to bring it to life in full color.

All materials included

Fee: $50 per student

8. Kids Introduction to the Pottery Wheel:

Wheel Throwing Pottery Class for Kids ages (12 to 16)

10:00 am to 12:00 pm

Fridays – July 28 through August 11

Have you ever wanted to try your hand at throwing pottery on the potter’s wheel, here’s your chance.  Learn the basic techniques to prep your clay, center it on the potter’s wheel and form it into your own piece of art.  Each student will spend session 1 throwing pieces on the wheel and during session 2 you will learn how to trim your pieces and ready them for initial firing.  During the final session, you will glaze paint your pieces and get an intro discussion on kilns and firing.
