Sgraffito

Sgraffito (in Italian "to scratch") is a decorating pottery technique produced by applying layers of colors (underglazes or colored slips) to leather hard pottery and then scratching off parts of the layer(s) to create contrasting images, patterns and texture and reveal the clay color underneath. This workshop provides an opportunity to use sgraffito to create a mandala plate.  You will learn to map out a mandala on a 10 inch leather hard plate and then experiment with various tools to carve repeating patterns resulting in a unique mandala design.  All materials will be provided and your plate will be glazed with a clear glaze then fired and available for pick up at a later date.

Surface Techniques – Water Etching and Underglaze Transfers

Water Etching for surface decoration involves painting a resist pattern onto a leather hard or bone-dry piece of pottery.  The clay is then wiped away around the resist pattern to render a beautiful etched finished surface.

Underglaze Transfers are pre-made designs or pictures painted on rice paper.  They are transferred to a piece of pottery at leather hard stage, bone dry or bisque stage.  They can be layered and filled with underglaze colors after transferring.  You can make custom designs on rice paper with underglazes or use commercially available designs.

Date: Sunday, September 15th, 2024

Time: 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Cost: $50 per person
